    (I'm gonna skip all the 'kitting' stuff.)

    She sighs at her three kits. She nudges the gray and white she-kit and says, "Icekit." Then she names the gray tom with a white foot Hailkit. Then she nudges the solid gray tom. It doesn't move; it's dead. She takes him by the scruff and goes out the nursery. She diggs a small hole and lays him in. "Sleep well, Graykit," she whispers. Silverstar finds Blazefoot waiting in the nursery when she gets back. She settles in and murmures, "I'm sorry, Blazefoot. They're not yours."
